Photo essay showing the differences between the 1984(85) Gen 1 Starscream and the 2003 re-issue by Hasbro.

2003 Starscream Commemorative Series II  ( There was a 2001 release also)

Photo coming soon

Wings:

Note: In all photos of the wings the G1 1984 is  the LEFT of the two pictured.

3021005_102.jpg (13475 bytes) Top view of a large-peg wing from jet. (G1 on the left)

No apparent difference. (2003 wing has not had the Decepticon logo applied. The red stripe was applied at the factory for both wings )

Length of pegs.

No apparent difference. The 2003 was a copy of the large-peg wing like the one in the left side if the photo.

Wingtips:

Here finally is molding diffirence that, so far, has held consistently in all the comparisons I have made. (even with short-peg G1 SS wings) .  Look closely at the two small projections on the back of each wing tip show at the bottom of each photo on the left.  The G1 Starscream wing (left) has a square shape projection, while the 2003 (right) has a rounded shape.

Rudders: (also called vertical fins, but Hasbro calls them Rudders in the Instruction Booklet) In all these photos, the G1 Rudder is on the left.

The 2003 re-issue Rudder was cast from what has been referred to by TF collectors as a large peg hole rudder.

3021005_084.jpg (13867 bytes) Sticker:

The white border on the 2003 rudder sticker (right) is wider, rounded, and does not come as close to the trailing edge of the rudder.

3021005_081.jpg (10388 bytes) Vent Holes:

No difference.

3021005_079.jpg (8268 bytes) Mold Numbers:

Like most large peg hole rudders, the 2003 (right) has a number in the rear inside. The number of our 2003 was 11.

3021005_083.jpg (21029 bytes) Quality of Mold:

The only difference found in this study was a lack of detail possibility caused by inferior molds or technique. The small rectangular box easily visible on the G1 (left) can barely be seen on the 2003 (right)

Tail Fins: ( also called Tail Wings, Horizontal Fins, or Elevators - Hasbro calls them Tail Fins)

More study is needed

Fuselage: (body)  In the photos below, the G1 is on the left or at the rear of the photo.

3021005_091.jpg (14150 bytes) Canopy: The Canopy design used by the  2003 the same as the second variation of the G1. The 2003 (foreground) uses what we refer to as the Type 2 canopy/

Manufactuer:

The only thing you really need to do to tell the bodies appart is look at the Manufacturer's name.  The 20032 has "Hasbro 2002" molded into its left leg. Note also the the 2003 was made in China, not japan.

 COLOR:

The 2003 has a slightly darker blue than our G1 Starscream. However, that could have been the result of 17 years of fading.

FIST/HANDS

G1

3021005_049.jpg (4718 bytes)

2002 Starscream Fist are Double Tab version of the G1. Since all the G1 Starscream fist appear to have been Single Tab, then all blue Starscream double tabs are probably the 2001 or 2003 re-issue.  This remains to be seen.

Missile Launchers

3021005_069.jpg (12101 bytes) 2003 Missile Launcher has a larger hold to accommodate the wider missile used by the 2003. Also, the 2003 launcher have springs and really launch the missiles.
